The drop in the unemployment rate in North Carolina is, ironically, bad news for long term unemployed workers who are struggling to return to the workforce. As we reported earlier, the lower unemployment rates in North Carolina in the last months has meant North Carolina workers no longer qualify for Extended Benefits: the last benefits program available to unemployed workers in states with high unemployment rates.

End of Extended Benefits

As of May 12, 2012, North Carolina no longer meets the qualifications required by the Federal and State Extended Benefits program. This means that regardless of how many weeks of Extended Benefits you may have left you will not be able to claim benefits after May 12, 2012.

What Is The Extended Benefits Program?

The Extended Benefits, or EB, program is a program operated by the State of North Carolina and regulated by federal, state and U.S. Department of Labor Policy. These laws determine when a state is eligible for Extended Benefit based either on the trend of the unemployment rate during the last two years. The policy is designed to help states with an increasing unemployment rate not states whose unemployment has remained stable or even dropped, as in the case of North Carolina.

Emergency Unemployment Compensation

The last available unemployment benefits available to workers in North Carolina is the fourth tier of the Emergency Unemployment Compensation program. The relatively high unemployment rate (around 8 percent) qualifies North Carolina workers for the maximum amount of benefits in this program which bases entitlement on total unemployment rate not on the unemployment trend when compared with previous years.

Interstate Claimants

Unemployed workers who are applying for Extended Benefits in North Carolina from other states may be able to continue receiving benefits through this program if the state where they reside in still meets EB requirements. In any case, the maximum they can receive is two weeks.

You can apply for these positions through the North Carolina State Government Employment website. This jobs database is not widely known. If you are quick, have the required skills and live in the right area you could bag yourself a juicy government job. Click here to access the North Carolina State Government Employment website, but before you do learn how to make the most of this new and exciting employment search website.

This new service from the North Carolina government allows you to search and apply for jobs from the comfort of your home. Not online can you search for jobs by just pressing a button, savvy users who create their own ‘Job Alert Card’ will receive alerts directly to their email when a new employment position comes up that matches their education, skills and experience.

Regardless of whether you create a Job Alert Card or simply apply for jobs currently available, you will need to register with the website before you can start sending applications. The process is not complicated, even if you are new to searching for work online.

Step 1: Create an Account

An account with the North Carolina State Government Employment site will allow you to search and apply for jobs that meet your abilities and work background. Simply click on Create/Manage Account on the website’s homepage. Click here to go directly to the ‘Create a Account page‘.

Step 2: Searching for Openings

Go to the Job Opportunities page. It is the big yellow button on the website’s homepage. You will now have to provide detailed information about your work background. It is important you provide this information so the database displays the jobs you are eligible for. Notice you can’t include resumes at this stage. All applications must include details on all your work experience and education. Once you have done this click on the Job Categories, Locations/Regions you are willing to commute to, and the government departments you wish to apply for (click them all).

If you are looking for a specific position, such as nurse or architect, you can insert this word in the search window at the end of the search form. This will allow you to filter all relevant jobs to that keyword.

Step 3: Create a Job Alert

If you can’t find a suitable job at this moment, create a job alert card and receive an email notification that a job opening is available. Click here to visit the Job Alert page.

The NC JobConnector is an automated system that matches job openings with suitable candidates by linking job orders with job seekers that meet the minimum requirements set by employers. These requirements may include a level of education, years of experience or specific skills. Click here to visit North Carolina’s JobConnector Job Matching System. However, before you visit the website get some tips on how to make the most out of your job search and improve your chances of finding employment.

If you are a business owner or human services officer looking for qualified workers, this website also provides you a valuable service. Instead of paying an agency to search for workers the North Carolina JobConnector Job Matching System finds suitable workers at no cost to you or your business.

Getting Started

The first step if you are a job seeker is to register as a user at the JobConnector website. Click on the ‘Register as a New User’ under the Job Seeker heading. Fill in the form and follow the instructions. You will need to provide information on your background, education, skills and qualifications. This will allow the system to match your particular skills with the job openings available on their database. Once you are registered you will need to login the website as a returning user. To do this click on the ‘Login to My Account’ link just below the Job Seeker heading on the website’s homepage.

Searching for Jobs

The next step is to search JobConnector’s job listings. To start click on the ‘Preview Job Listings’ link on the homepage. The beauty of this job matching system is how you can filter employment opportunities based on a variety of factors. For instance you can search for jop opportunities by county or region. This will filter out jobs which your feel are to far to commute to. You may also search for jobs by industry or group of occupations. The website refers to this as ‘Job Families’. At the bottom of the page you will see a drop-window under the heading Job Family. Click on the arrow at the right of the window and select the industry type you are interested in.

If you are looking for a particular type of job, you can be more specific and search by job title or occupation, such as driver, nurse, paralegal and so on. To do this, go to the Search by Job Title/Occupation section and type in your job occupation.
