Finding the Perfect Job for You

One of the best lessons I learned in school as from my tenth grade history teacher. He told us that if we ever got to a point in our lives where we dreaded getting out of bed to go to work, then we should make a career change. He was a firm believer in loving what you do because you are going to be going there until you retire, so you better like what you are doing.

This was a great lesson, but far too often people find themselves in a job that they hate. There have been cases where people dreaded going to their jobs so much that they would be physically ill in the mornings. They would develop migraines and would vomit every morning before going to their dread job. If you ever get to this point in your career, it is time to make a change. Your case might not be this dramatic. You may simply dislike your boss or your coworkers. This is also a sign that is time to start job searching.

When you are searching for your new job, you need to consider a few concepts before you find yourself in another dead-end or dissatisfying position. Begin by looking for fit. If you fit in at your job, you will be able to perform better and able to grow in the position. You also need to know yourself. What do you want to do in a position and what do you expect from yourself? Do you like to be out front and conduct meetings or manage people? Do you prefer a low-key position where you have your own space and are allowed to work in peace?

Other employees, executives and the Human Resources department may even influence you on whether the job is for you or not. If you are a punctual individual and the business leaves you waiting for thirty minutes after you were scheduled to be there, then you will know that the position is not for you. Your ethics and values should also match the position. You will not be happy if you are constantly feeling as though people are unethical and working against what you believe is good business practice.

Be honest with yourself and what you expect in an employer. What excites you the most about your work? Knowing yourself and your needs is the first step in finding a position that is right for you. You may find yourself applying for numerous jobs before you find the one that fits your personality and lifestyle.
