  • euc extension North Carolina’s Division of Employment Security Announces an Extension of EUC and Extended Benefits

North Carolina extends EUC and EB benefits until August 2012.

Emergency measures taken by Congress and the President last month provided North Carolina’s Employment Security Division with the authority to extend Emergency Unemployment Compensation benefits (EUC) and Extended Benefits (EB) by two months.

    Emergency Unemployment Compensation Benefits Extension

This extension increases allows unemployed workers who have exhausted their state unemployment compensation benefits or will do so before February 26, 2012. Note that unemployed workers who are already receiving EUC benefits may only apply for additional EUC tiers by March 4, 2012. Unless there is another extension of unemployment benefits, workers who exhaust their current tier benefits after March 4, 2012 will no longer qualify for federal EUC benefits.

Workers who have been temporarily laid off but are still attached to their employers can also apply for EUC benefits, if they have already exhausted their UI benefits.

The last payment date for workers enrolled in the Emergency Unemployment Compensation program under the current extension will be for weeks ending on August 18, 2012. Any weeks ending after this date will not be eligible for benefits.

    Extended Benefits Extension

The high unemployment rate of North Carolina qualifies unemployed workers in this state for the Extended Benefits program. This program has also been recently extended by congress. The Extended Benefits program is available for workers who have exhausted their Emergency Unemployment Compensation benefits and are still unemployed.

The Extended Benefits program requires unemployed workers to carry out a sustained and systematic effort to find work. This means all workers receiving extended benefits must search for work on at least two different days and contact at least two potential employers every week they file for benefits. Unlike workers enrolled in UI and EUC programs, workers receiving extended benefits must file their job search records with their local Employment Security Commission office. Notice that these extensions do not provide additional benefit weeks to unemployed workers. It only increases the number of workers who may apply for existing benefits. In other words, if a worker has already exhausted his weeks of benefits, he cannot now apply for more weeks based on this new extension. However, there may be other programs you can apply for after you finish your current benefits program.
